About this product

Rated at 435 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque, the ATK HP36 runs AFR's aluminum heads, 72cc chambers and 180cc ports, with valves sized at 2.02/1.60, a different head casting than ATK uses on some of its other 383 stroker builds. Who this engine suits The bottom end leans on Scat too: a nodular-iron crankshaft and matching forged connecting rods, fastened with ARP 8740 hardware, running forged pistons at 10:1 compression. This is a bare long block: ATK leaves the Edelbrock dual-plane intake, carburetor, HEI distributor, and water pump off, listing them only as suggested parts for the builder to add. What this tier leaves out Balancer, flexplate, and flywheel are not part of this base build, all left for the installer to source. ATK's parts sheet for this cam calls for a noticeably higher stall-speed converter than its milder 383 engines; ask us for the exact figure before ordering a torque converter. This compression and cam pairing wants premium-grade gasoline. Common questions Is there a carburetor on this engine? No, the carburetor, intake, distributor, and water pump are left off; ATK lists them only as suggested parts. Why AFR heads instead of Dart? ATK pairs this particular 383 build with AFR's 180cc-port castings rather than the Dart heads used on some of its other stroker engines. What's the compression ratio? This combination runs 10:1, a notch below ATK's highest-compression 383 stroker engines in this lineup. California requires BAR compliance for engine swap installations.
